More than 3,700 players have come together to rebuild New York City inside Minecraft, block by block, at a real-life scale. This huge project is part of Build The Earth, a global effort started by YouTuber PippenFTS to recreate the entire Earth in the game.
Around 45 teams from different regions are working on the project, but the New York City team is the largest and busiest. The team includes experienced builders with real-life architectural skills, as well as beginners who are building their first virtual sidewalk.
The team is focusing on Lower Manhattan first, which is one of the hardest areas to rebuild. The neighborhood has lots of buildings and streets that are not straight. So far, they’ve recreated famous spots like Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty, SoHo, NoHo, Nolita, Little Italy, Chinatown, and Two Bridges.
Accuracy is very important in this project. Builders use real-world data, like satellite images and street photos, to make sure everything looks right. Sometimes, they have to rebuild parts several times to get it just right.
The team divides the city into grids and works across time zones. They use special tools to make sure the layout matches the real-world landscape. A shared server helps everyone work together by saving all the progress, data, and logs.
Even though Lower Manhattan is almost done, the team says this is just the start. They are now working on parts of Midtown and Queens, and Brooklyn is starting to take shape. The Bronx and Staten Island haven’t been started yet, meaning this project will take a long time to finish.
The project is open to anyone who wants to join, no matter their experience level. You don’t need to be a pro builder. New players get access to tutorials, maps, and templates to make sure everything stays consistent.
The project is still growing, and new people can join in. Anyone interested can join through the Build The Earth NYC Discord or visit the official website to become part of this big virtual team.
