Microsoft has started sending updates to its Notepad and Paint apps for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. These updates add new AI-powered features and make the apps easier to use, which helps with work and creativity.

The update for Notepad (version 11.2512.10.0) focuses on making it a better tool for editing Markdown and improving its AI features. Now, it supports more Markdown options, including strikethrough and nested lists. You can use these options through the toolbar, shortcuts, or by editing the text directly.

A new welcome screen has also been added to show recent updates. You can close this screen, but it can be opened again by clicking a megaphone icon in the toolbar.

Microsoft has also made Notepad’s AI tools faster. Text from tools like Write, Rewrite, and Summarize now shows up while it’s being made, giving a faster preview. But, you need to sign in with a Microsoft account to use them.

The latest Paint update (version 11.2512.191.0) adds a new AI tool called Coloring Book. This feature lets you create custom coloring pages by typing a description. After you type it, Paint makes line-drawing pages that can be added to the canvas, copied, or saved. This feature works only on Copilot+ PCs and needs a Microsoft account.

Paint also got a small improvement with a fill tolerance slider. This gives you more control over how the Fill tool colors areas. The slider appears on the left side of the canvas when you use the tool.

These changes are now available for testing by Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels.
