People on Reddit noticed something very strange.
Some high-end SSDs are now more expensive than gold.

A Reddit user named Dark_Marmot shared this comparison.
He said the WD Black SSD costs more than its weight in 24-karat gold.

At first, it sounded like a joke.
But now, experts say it is almost true for big SSDs.

How SSD Is Compared With Gold

Gold price is about $4,601 per ounce.

8TB WD Black SSD

  • Weight: 8.6 grams

  • Gold value of this weight: $1,396

  • Current SSD price: $2,169.99

So yes, this SSD is more expensive than gold.

Before, in October, the price was around $1,000.
But it increased very fast because there are not enough SSDs available.

4TB WD Black SSD

  • Weight: 7.5 grams

  • Gold value: $1,217

  • SSD price: $1,144.99

This one is almost equal to gold price.

Tech website Tom’s Hardware checked many stores and confirmed this.

Why Are SSD Prices So High?

The WD Black SN8100 is a premium and enterprise SSD.
It is made for servers and heavy work, not normal users.

So its price increase is very strong.

Normal SSD Prices Also Going Up

Even normal users are feeling the pain.

According to PCPartPicker:

  • 2TB SSD now costs around $300

  • 4TB SSD now costs around $600

These prices were much lower last year.

AI Is the Main Reason

The biggest reason is AI demand.

Big AI companies need:

  • SSDs

  • DRAM

  • NAND memory

They are buying huge amounts for data centers.

Because of this:

  • Samsung and SK Hynix increased DRAM prices by up to 70%

  • DDR4 chip prices jumped from $28 to $90

  • Some people even started using older DDR3 again

Hard Drive Prices Also Increasing

In the US, HDD prices are still stable.

But in Europe, prices are going up fast.

German website ComputerBase reports:

  • HDD prices increased 46% since September

  • Some 4TB to 30TB drives went up 50–60% in just 4 months

Will Prices Go Down Soon?

Most experts say NO.

They believe:

  • SSD and memory shortage will continue

  • Prices may stay high until 2026

For the biggest and fastest SSDs,
“SSD is more expensive than gold” is no longer a joke.
It is now real life.
