Hackers have stolen a very large number of accounts. About 183 million emails and passwords were shared online. This has been happening for many months and puts many people in danger.
Hackers used bad software called infostealer. This software secretly watches what you type on your computer. It can steal your email and password when you use the internet.
After stealing this information, hackers saved it in big files and shared it on secret websites and apps like Telegram.
A security company named Synthient found this problem with help from a website called Have I Been Pwned. They checked a huge amount of data and found 183 million stolen accounts. A security expert named Troy Hunt also checked the data and said it was real. Many of the stolen accounts were Gmail accounts.
Hackers also use a trick where they try the same password on many websites. If you use the same password everywhere, it becomes easy for hackers to break in.
How to Check If Your Password Is Stolen
You can check your password for free on the website Have I Been Pwned.
Type your password into the checker. You do not need to enter your email.
The site will tell you if your password was leaked before.
If your password is found, it means hackers already know it and it is not safe anymore.
What to Do If Your Password Is Stolen
Change your email password first. Your email is very important.
Change passwords on other websites where you used the same password.
Turn on extra security (two-step login). This means you need a code along with your password.
In addition, it is very important to ensure that the password for your most valuable accounts used for banking, business, or primary email is never the same as the password you use to register on less trustworthy websites and social media. You can also choose a strong password combination as a precaution.
