Pierre-Loup Griffais is a person who helped make SteamOS and the Steam Deck.
He said Valve started planning for the future many years ago, around 2016 and 2017.
At that time, Valve did not have a new device ready.
But the company already knew that Arm chips use less power.
This is important because it helps devices last longer on battery and cost less money.
Valve wanted future devices to be cheap, fast, and power-saving.
Valve Knew This Work Would Take a Long Time
Valve understood that making this technology would not be fast or easy.
The company believed it would take almost 10 years to finish.
Because of this, Valve supported a developer named Ryan Houdek.
He works on a special tool called Fex.
Even though Ryan does not work directly for Valve,
Valve paid him so he could work on Fex full time.
What Is Fex and Why It Is Important
Fex is a tool that helps PC games work on Arm devices.
It changes the game instructions so different hardware can understand them.
Valve thinks this is better than changing every game by hand.
Changing games one by one takes too much time and money.
Valve believes one strong tool is better than fixing thousands of games.
Valve Is Not Making New Arm Devices Yet
Valve says it is not building new Arm-based devices right now.
But other companies are interested in using SteamOS.
If those companies make devices,
they can use Fex to help games run properly.
This means more devices could support Steam in the future.
Valve Does Not Like Manual Game Porting
In the future, Qualcomm wants more games to run natively on Arm Windows.
But Valve does not think this is the best way.
Pierre-Loup Griffais said manual porting is a waste of time.
Valve prefers tools like Fex that work automatically.
Valve Also Helps Mobile and Android Apps
Valve already has a tool called Proton.
Proton helps Windows games run on SteamOS.
Now, Valve has a special version that can also run Android apps.
This helps developers move games from VR headsets and mobile devices to Steam.
It also helps mobile games come to the Steam platform.
Steam Games on Phones and Tablets
There is an Android app called GameHub.
It already uses Fex to run PC games on phones and tablets.
Right now, this is still an experiment.
But Valve’s support can help it grow bigger.
In the future, phones may play more PC games.
New Laws Are Helping This Happen
In Europe, there is a law called the Digital Markets Act.
This law forces Apple to allow other app stores on iPhones.
Because of this, Epic Games is making its own iOS app store.
Google also wants to limit app installation on Android,
but many countries are making laws to stop this.
Phones Could Become Steam Handhelds
If governments win these fights, something big could happen.
Steam may run directly on phones like iPhone or Samsung.
With Fex, phones could run PC games without internet streaming.
Your phone could act like a Steam Deck.
Valve’s Big Idea for the Future
Valve did not support Fex for almost ten years just for one device.
The real goal is much bigger.
Valve wants Steam to work on any device,
no matter what chip or system it uses.
The company believes the future is about the Steam ecosystem,
not about one type of hardware.
Slowly, the difference between PC, mobile, and other devices is disappearing.
